I love to watch Rye Rye mash up a dance floor. She makes me want to plant my feet wide and work up myself. Unfortunately, where Rye Rye looks like she’s holding all the music in her body and translating it effortlessly, I look more like I’m ‘dancing to the music in my head’, as my Mama likes to say. I first witnessed her dance skills at an MIA concert in London where she threw down to XR2. Rye Rye is magnetic to the eye because she’s bouncing double-time until the dance is done: she’s never flat-footed; she finishes every move; she never tapers off or winds down. Her presence in this video is the antithesis to slouching nonchalance, disdain or irony (all of which I very much admire), but she embodies cool because she is totally inside her creative moment, riding the beat with conviction.
