| X: | in my first semester they had this two hour long nothing seminar where they told us when to have kids etc. and EVERYBODY WENT EVERY WEEK (except for me, sometimes), i was just like, yo |

| Y: | hahaha |
| X: | if you tried to pull this shit in the uk NOBODY WOULD GO because it's incredibly boring and pointless |
| Y: | yup & yup |
| X: | and i know this is a bit stubborn but i do just find sitting through that stuff demeaning. i don't think it's arrogant not to want to sit through hours and hours of pointless professionalising chatter that sucks all of the joy out of what we're doing |
| Y: | The US academy = obsessed with professionalisation, (even) in the humanities. Things most valued = attendance and competitiveness and the main question is how much do you want a JOB. You're judged on the extent to which you'll sharpen your claws and whiten your smile in preparation for the competition that awaits you at the end of the degree. If you aren't seen to be having babies at the *right* time etc., then you don't want it enough. And god, it *is* demeaning to be told when it's "appropriate" to have your babies |
| X: | yeah and that just doesn't occur to them for a single second. bioacademics |
